Alumni

EEGAP program alumni have gone on to graduate study and research internships to prepare them for the next phase of their career.

2019 cohort

  • Malik Chennault (mentor: Peter Wainwright) is a junior at Howard University.
  • Arquel Miller (mentors: Rachel Vannette and Shawn Christiansen) returned to Howard University and is applying for graduate study.
  • William Speakman Smith (mentors: Jennifer Gremer and Megan Bontrager) is a junior at Howard University.

2018 cohort

  • Imade Ojo (mentors: Rachel Vannette and Allie Igwe) After attending the Annual Meetings of the Ecological Society of America, Imade will finish her senior year and is considering her next steps.
  • Lauren Okafor (mentors: Jennifer Gremer and Elena Suglia) After attending the Annual Meetings of the Ecological Society of America, Lauren returned to Howard for her junior year.
  • Marlynn Rollins (mentors: Rick Grosberg and Serena Caplins) returned to Davis in Summer 2018 for a major role in Slugs: the Return of the Larvae. She will begin a PhD in Ecology and will be a trainee in the Sustainable Oceans NRT program at UC Davis starting in Fall 2019.

2017 cohort

  • Marlynn Rollins (mentors: Rick Grosberg and Serena Caplins) returned to Howard University for her junior year. Marlynn will return to Davis in Summer 2018 for a major role in Slugs: the Return of the Larvae 
  • Elizabeth Stuart (mentors: Jay Stachowicz, Rick Grosberg, and Nicole Kollars) graduated from Howard University in December 2018 and is considering her options.
  • Kevin Wickham (mentors: Rick Grosberg and Vicky Morgan) returned to Howard University for his junior year. Kevin will continue to work with Vicky on bioinformatic analyses of land crab evolution. Kevin received an Honorable Mention in the 2018 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Competition, and will enter the Molecular and Cellular Biology program at UC Berkeley in Fall 2019.
  • Amoi Campbell (mentor: Sharon Strauss and Anna O’Brien, with funding from the NSF Dimensions of Biodiversity program) returned to Howard University for her senior year.
  • Anika Hamilton (mentor: Sharon Strauss and Moria Robinson, with funding from the NSF Dimensions of Biodiversity program) returned to Howard University for her senior year.

2016 cohort

  • Chidera Alim (mentors: Peter Wainwright and Jennifer Hodge) graduated from Howard University in May 2017 and began the UC Davis PhD program in Molecular, Cell, and Integrative Physiology in fall 2017. She recently joined the lab of Julie Bossuyt.
  • Frederick Nelson (mentors: Nann Fangue and Anne Todgham, with Brittany Bjelde) graduated from Howard University in May 2017 and began the UC Davis PhD program in Ecology in fall 2017. Fred received a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation and was elected Vice President of the American Fisheries Society, Davis Sacramento Student Subunit, for 2018-2019.
  • Kabian Ritter (mentor: Louie Yang) graduated from Howard University in May 2017 and began the UC Davis PhD program in Energy in fall 2017. His graduate group recently sent him to his alma mater to recruit!
  • Abiel Spencer (mentors: Rick Grosberg, with Frances Armstrong and Serena Caplins) has entered the Global Health MD program at the American University of Antigua.
  • Morinne Osborne (mentor: Sharon Strauss, with funding from the NSF Dimensions of Biodiversity program) returned to Howard University for her junior year and graduated in Spring 2018.
  • Jessica Broaden (mentor: Mark Schwartz, with funding from the NSF Dimensions of Biodiversity program) returned to Howard University for her junior year and graduated in Spring 2018.

2015 cohort

  • Erin Manaigo (mentors: Ben Houlton, Joy Cockingham) began the UC Davis doctoral program in Soils and Biogeochemistry in Fall 2016.
  • Frederick Nelson (mentors: Nann Fangue and Anne Todgham, with Brittany Bjelde) — see 2016 cohort.
  • Morgen Owens (mentors: Santiago Ramirez, with Nick Saleh) returned to Howard University for her junior year, graduated, and has begun medical school at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.

2014 cohort

  • Nia Johnson (mentors: Sharon Strauss and Ivalu Cachó) graduated, entered the Teach for America program, and will attend graduate school at the University of Michigan in Fall 2017.
  • Chandler Puritty (mentors: Sharon Strauss and Ivalu Cachó) has entered the doctoral program in Ecology at UC San Diego. Chandler also received a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation.
  • DeAna Smalls (mentors: Johanna Schmitt and Daniel Runcie) graduated from Howard University.

In addition, the UC Davis College of Biological Sciences funded two students who did research in the biomedical sciences. These students joined their EEGAP colleagues for professional development.

  • Brittany Bush (mentor: Keith Baar) entered a PhD program in Neuroscience at the Morehouse School of Medicine.
  • Erin Malone (mentor: Neil Hunter) is on the final legs of a DDS/PhD program at UCSF.

2013 cohort

  • Mayowa Adegboyega (mentors: Peter Wainwright, Thomas Claverie, and Sarah Longo) is a doctoral candidate in the Anthropology PhD program at UC Davis and has become a graduate student leader. She will compete in the UC Davis Grad Slam finals in April 2018, has been named to the 2018-2019 cohort of the UC Davis Professors for the Future program, and will serve as the Graduate Student Assistant to the Dean in 2018-2019.
  • Shaleeka Cornelius (mentors: Tim Caro and Monique Borgerhoff-Mulder) is a student at Meharry Medical College.
  • Liseli James (mentors: Tim Caro and Monique Borgerhoff-Mulder) is a medical student at Howard University
  • Angel Rogers Charles (mentors: Rick Grosberg and Scott Burgess) studied at Oxford University with funding from the Luard Morse Scholarship, graduated from Howard, and entered Cornell Weill School of Medicine. Angel recently received a fellowship from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Clinical Research Mentorship program and will work with her mentor, David Scheinberg, to develop targeted immunotherapy to treat HPV-induced cancers.
  • Ambria McDonald (mentors: Gail Patricelli, Alan Krakauer, and Alejandro Rios Chelen) works for the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Khalil Thomas (mentors: Janine LaSalle and Rochelle Coulson) entered a Ph.D. program in Neuropsychology at Georgia State University and received a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation.

2012 cohort

  • Alexandria Igwe (mentors: Sharon Strauss with Ania Truszczynski) completed a master’s program in Texas A&M University and entered the PhD program in microbiology at UC Davis. Allie has become a graduate student leader and serves as the Graduate Student Director/RROC Finance Chair, GAAAP: Graduate Academic Achievement and Advocacy Program
  • DeAshia Lee (mentor: Brian Johnson) entered a PhD program at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
  • Brittany Stallworth Jackson (mentors: Sharon Strauss with Michelle Afkhami) received a 2012 Brower Youth Award for Environmental Leadership from the Earth Island Institute. You can learn about Brittany and her work here. She served as a Challenge Detroit Fellow and now is in medical school at Wayne State University.
